Trackside: British GT 2021 @ Oulton Park Rounds 7 & 8
As autumn hits, British GT moved to Oulton Park for its delayed rounds of the championship. As usual, we made the drive to our “local” circuit to be trackside to enjoy two races in very different conditions. With it been Britain rain was always a chance, but I don’t think anyone expected race two to be the complete rain dance that it turned into. For race one though, although not hot, the weather held off for a decent dry race.
For race one, it was the Bentley of Kevin Fletcher, who had qualified on pole the previous day, that lead from the get-go. Right up to the point he had to take avoiding action into T1. As the Ciceley GT4 Merc had been turned around by the Supra. This let the Ram Racing Merc AMG GT3 of Kevin Tse through. Once Tom Onslow-Cole got behind the wheel at the pit stops, no one could stop them.
GT4 was all about the Newbridge Aston Martin, Matt Topham gained the lead during the pit cycle and once Darren Turner got behind the wheel. He was gone down the road like usual.
Race two was pretty much a fight to survive by the looks of it. The weather had turned wet and just continued to get worse. Beechdean AMR’s woes of the weekend continued, both Andrew Howard and AMR works driver Johnny Adam were off the pace. Howards huge quali crash on Saturday had totalled his Vantage GT3 and overnight a new chassis had been built up. But the wet weather was accentuating that there was something wrong with the Aston.
Up the top end of GT3 it was looking like Ian Loggie in his Ram Racing Merc AMG GT3 was on course to take a well-deserved win, that was until he received a drive-through penalty. Thus handing the win to Michael Igoe and Phil keen in the WPI Lamborghini.
GT4 saw the BMW M4 GT4 of Will Burns and Gus Burton executing a masterful late run to the lead of the GT3 category. In doing so also sealing the GT4 title with a round to go for Century Racing.
As always the British GT delivered another great watch trackside, and for them watching on the live stream. We will be back trackside at Donington for the final round.
