Trackside: British GT 2021 @ Silverstone 500
After almost a full year, we finally got back trackside at Silverstone for the British GT’s flagship round, the Silverstone 500. It might not have been baking hot and blue skies. But it was good to be back watching live motorsport in person once again. Add in that the Silverstone 500 always pulls in some big names and one-off entries, I couldn’t think of a better race to get back trackside.
The big names to return to the championship for Silverstone were TF Sport with 2 Aston Martin Racing GT3’s, 2 Seas in their new for 2021 Mercedes AMG GT3, and Jenson Team Rocket returning to the GT3 class with a Mclaren 720S GT3. Add in the current championship contenders, Beechdean AMR, Barwell with their Lambos, and Ram Racing in the very very pink Merc AMG’s. In GT4 it was the usual gaggle, Century with the BMW’s, RJN Team Rocket with the Mclaren development drivers, Academy’s Ford Mustang, and Toyota Gazoo UK with the Supra GT4. Plus the newcomer, Newbridge with an Aston GT4 and the GT4 race was just as hot as the GT3 race.
The race was dominated at first by 2 Seas in the AMG, pulling a huge lead over the pack. The Barwell 63 came back at them though and pulled a beautiful overtake into Luffield, it wasn’t enough though as their pitstop handicap stopped them from capitalising on their mid-race pace. 2 Seas, finally got back out front and stayed there. Both the Barwell Lamborghini’s got into a scrap and on the last lap, the number 1 car squeezed past the 63 car… With maybe an elbow been played as well. Further back, TF Sport showed that they still knew how to perform well with the AMR GT3, taking 4th. And Beachdean came back strong after a poor by their standards qualifying.
GT4 saw the new boys taking a win, which was very impressive, although the added talent of Darren Turner I am sure helped. The Stellar Motorsport Audi R8 GT4 had its usual strong race pace to come second. Third, was the Supra, in a race where they just got their head down and stayed out of trouble. Century’s pitstop gambling didn’t pay off, as they intended due to no safety car resulting in the top BMW coming home 4th.
As always the British GT delivered another great watch trackside, and for them watching on the live stream. We will be back trackside for Oulton Park and Donington at the end of the year.
