Trackside: British GT 2021 @ Donington Park Round 9
Last weekend was the final of the British GT, the well dubbed #Doningtondecider. The GT4 championship had already gone the way of BMW with Century Motorsport at the last round. But Donny would see the crowning of the overall GT3 champion. The weather was very British, with the journey down peppered with bouts of rain. The forecast was for a dry race, but that was never going to happen now, was it.
The race started in the wet, with all the GT3’s starting out on wet tyres. All but one GT4 opted for wets as well, except for one brave BMW driver in the #9. Apart from being wet, the track was visibly greasy and very slippery. As the #18 WPI Lamborghini found out after starting on pole. On the opening lap, the Lambo had spun and then not too long later ended up in the gravel trap at Coppice. The #7 Beechdean AMR had a good start jumping up a few places at the start but slowly started to drop back again. At some point, the car also ended up in a half spin, out of view from us.
The 3rd place finishing #8 Abba Merc looked quick out on track all race, sparking each lap down the Craner Curves. But it was the #77 Mclaren of Enduro Motorsport that was the class of the field on race day. Starting towards the front of the grid. Then getting into the lead to stay there until the end of the race. Although a late surge from Ram Racing’s #6 Merc was cut short by a red flag finish to the final race of the season.
In GT4, the #61 Mustang of Academy Motorsport took 1st place in what was a fantastic race for them. Even overcoming a successes penalty of 10 seconds in the pits. Team Rocket RJN were able to pedal the #3 Mclaren 570S GT4 to second. Capitalising on the damp track and shuffling the pole starting #42 Steller Motorsport Audi R8 GT4 down the order. Century Motorsport with the #57 BMW M4 GT4 brought the car home in third, once again showing why they are the GT4 champions this year.
With the red flag coming out at the end of the race thanks to a GT4 Mclaren stopped in a dangerous place. It was the #63 Lamborghini of Barwell motorsport that took the Championship with Leo Machitski and Dennis Lind as Drivers champions.
Once again the British GT put on a great show. Next year hopefully will just be as competitive, hopefully with old names returning and new names making an entrance into the championship.
