Trackside: FIA WEC Le Mans 24 Hours 2024
We had the incredible opportunity to experience the Le Mans 24 hours trackside for the first time, fulfilling a long-standing item on our bucket list. It was a sold-out affair, never have we seen so many people at a motorsport event before. Then again we are in another golden era of sportscar racing with so many manufacturers across Hypercar and LMGT3.
The race itself was a real challenge due to the unpredictable weather conditions. Luckily, we had seats in the Goodyear stand at Dunlop, so we were sheltered from the rain. Thankfully, most of the rain came down during the night when we had headed for some sleep.
Most of our exploring of the circuit was during dry running, and what a place it is. Watching the hypercars navigate LMGT3s from Dunlop down to the start of the Mulsanne straight was a great experience with how much access there is to the public in that section.
In Hypercar Ferrari, Porsche, Cadillac and Toyota all looked very fast. BMW WRT unfortunately had a terrible run on their return, while Peugeot kind of ran under the radar along with Lamborghini Iron Lynx. Ferrari coming out on top was not our personal choice, but Toyota pushed them hard all the way to the end.
LMGT3 is the class we followed more closely, backing Heart of Racing and D’Station with the AMR Vantage GT3 Evo. HoR looked to be on for a podium till they ended up on their lid in a nasty-looking shunt. BMW WRT looked fast trackside, but again it wasn’t their year for the win, at least they got a podium. Manthey Porsche was always there and it’s no surprise they won. The Mustangs from Proton sounded epic, and with their ejecto boot lid now sorted deserved the podium they got.
No doubt about it, the Le Mans 24 is an incredible event to attend. If you ever get the chance, we highly recommend it. We’re already planning to go back there again next year.
