Trackside: British GT Donington Decider 2023
It’s October, so that can mean only one thing, the Donington Decider of the British GT championship. Although next year it will be at Brands Hatch… But we will gloss over that. Back to this year, it was all to play for in GT3 and GT4. GT3 saw 2 Seas with the AMG GT3 of James Cottingham and Johnny Adam holding a 13 point lead over Century Motorsport with the BMW M4 GT3 of Darren Leung and Dan Harper, while GT4 is a six-way fight for the championship.
Pole position was taken by Beachdeans Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3, the final race for the current car, as next year Prodrive and AMR are rolling out the EVO Aston Martin race car. Further back was a fleet of McLaren 720s all out for blood, I mean victory along with 2 Lambourginihs from Barwell, that always go well here.
GT4 saw a fleet of the new Mclaren Artura GT4, one BMW M4 GT4 and one Mustang GT4 all going into the final race with a chance to take the title. The favourites was one of the new Mclaren Artura’s taking it, but as with GT3, the race didn’t go as expected.
Once the race was underway, it was very apparent that 2 Seas were in a losing position. As The Century BMW M4 GT3 romped into the lead in the first stint. The Aston was no match for it, and even with a few safety cars, nothing was getting in the way. Into stint 2, and the pros at the wheel, Barwell had used the pitstops to jump into the lead, thanks to Century’s success penalty from Brands Hatch. Not that it kept them behind that long, as they stormed back into 2nd and claimed the GT3 Championship.
In GT4 there was an almighty crash into the first corner, with 2 Ginetta’s making contact and hitting the wall hard. Thankfully both drivers walked away but the safety car was called on for a period. As for the championship race, that was hard to follow trackside. Especially after the pitstops, but the #61 Mustang from Academy Motorsport ended up in the lead and did everything they needed to get the championship.
Like usual the British GT put on a great show, with plenty of action and overtaking. The whole multiclass element of the series works well, and leads it more to a ACO style of race rather than the usual SRO European races.
