Trackside: British GT 2020 @ Oulton Park Video and Gallery – Corona Special
It feels weird to be saying this, but last weekend was the first time this year we got to attend a race meeting in person. Damn, it felt good to be back at a race circuit. We had headed over to Oulton Park for round 1 & 2 of the British GT championship. The first thing to say though is well done to MSV. The circuit owners for getting the place ready for spectators to attend. They had plenty of hand sanitizer around and were regularly keeping the amenities disinfected. Even with the place been pretty busy, to be honest.
Getting to the racing though and considering the times. The championship is still pulling in plenty of competitors in both GT3 and GT4. Unfortunately, we have dropped a few cars in GT3 with no Astons present at the moment, and only 2 in GT4. But we have gained a handful of Mclarens 720s’s, the big name being Jenson Team Rocket. In GT4, there is still a great variety and the addition of the Toyota Supra GT4 from Speedwork’s makes it even better.
Race 1
The first race started as an all Mclaren affair with them locking out the top 4 positions in qualifying. Surprisingly, the Jenson Team Rocket was the Mclaren that jumped to first at the start and stayed there to the chequered flag. While Optimum Motorsport having changed from Aston to Mclaren, pulled a second out the bag. Third was 2 Seas, a new entrant in British GT. In GT4 TF Sport started their scaled down Aston campaign with a 1st and 3rd. HHC bring their 570s home in 2nd.
Race2
The second race was a Barwell Lambo affair with a one, two at the chequer. Phil Keen matching Johnny Adam as British GT’s most successful drivers with 16 race victories apiece. Ram Racing with the Merc closed out the podium with 3rd. GT4 went the way of Balfe Mclaren, TF Sport Aston, HHC Mclaren. But the big news was the large accident that ended the race. The GT3 Bentley of Parker Racing collecting the GT4 Aston #95 of TF Sport going through Dentons into Cascades. A pretty fast and narrow part of the circuit. Ripping the right front wheel off the Aston, which subsequently hit the #9 2 Seas McLaren’s also taking it out of the race. All of which caused a length safety car, that was out till the end of the race.
